Abstract

With the rapid development of motor vehicles, the travel mode of Chinese residents began to change from walking and bicycle travel to motor vehicle travel in the early 1990s. Such a trend is particularly evident in the Chaoyang District of Beijing, which is the core area of the economic development of the city. Although the trend will continue in the short term, walking and cycling still account for a large proportion of trips. However, there are still some defects in the pedestrian and bicycle traffic system in Chaoyang District, like an incomplete road network, insufficient supporting facilities, and safety problems in walking and cycling. Under such circumstances, Chaoyang District needs to scientifically formulate walking and cycling roads and facility systems to meet future traffic needs while making up for the current deficiencies. The research is made for creating a safe, sustainable and comfortable walking and cycling environment and encouraging the development of non-motorized transportation in Chaoyang District of Beijing.

Considering the status quo of slow traffic in Chaoyang District and the recent foreign experience in slow traffic planning, the research divides the planning process into the following six main tasks, namely “background analysis”, “overall planning”, “bicycle traffic facility planning”, “pedestrian traffic facility planning”, “planning and design suggestions” and “case analysis”. A brief introduction is made to each task in the paper. Meanwhile, detailed suggestions and planning for land use of walking and cycling lanes as well as commercial sites are made to meet the needs of potential pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the future, improve urban living conditions, and promote more sustainable urban development.
