Abstract

The transportation industry is an important source of emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and air pollutants. Energy saving and emission reduction in the transportation industry have an important impact on the peaking of China’s carbon dioxide emission around 2030 and the trend after peaking. With the development of shared travel and autonomous driving, electrified, sharing, intelligent, and networked transportation is becoming more and more popular. The urban travel structure and transportation energy efficiency are expected to be further improved. Didi Chuxing platform released the Didi Platform Green Transport White Paper 2020. The report compared different carbon emission levels from carpooling, ride-hailing, two-wheel, charging, intelligent transportation and other businesses to summarize the green travel data of the Didi platform.

It is pointed out in the report that the major strategies of the Didi platform for promoting green transport include supporting carpooling, encouraging slow traffic, promoting transportation electrification, improving the efficiency of public transportation, and optimizing transportation infrastructure. For supporting carpooling, the platform optimizes carpool routes through algorithms and explores ways to cooperate with third-party credit product enterprises to further improve travel safety. For encouraging slow traffic, the platform has launched the bike-sharing and e-bike-sharing business to realize the goal of “full-chain sustainable” development. For promoting transportation electrification, the platform has increased the proportion of electric vehicle service and integrated the charging station resources. For improving the efficiency of public transportation, the platform has cooperated with bus companies in different regions to carry out customized bus and bus information inquiry services. For optimizing transportation infrastructure, the platform has constructed the Didi Smart Transportation Brain with the capabilities of comprehensive perception, analysis, decision-making, and solution application for urban transportation systems based on travel big data and technical ability.

Through the analysis, suggestions for the platform to promote the development of green travel are put forward as follows:

The first is to integrate shared travel into the green transport system of urban transportation, give full play to the technical capabilities of the shared travel platform, integrate multi-modal trips with intelligent travel applications and algorithms, and further reduce cost, time, and emission of traveling.

The second is to create a new type of slow traffic system and provide adequate infrastructure support. Shared travel platforms can give full play to the advantages of innovative technologies to give priority to slow traffic infrastructure on road.

The third is to give full play to the role of the shared travel platform in the application and promotion of new energy vehicles and to use the big data technology of the travel platform to improve the operation efficiency of charging stations.

The fourth is to incorporate digital technology into urban traffic governance. Based on travel big data and its own technological innovation capabilities, the shared travel platform can cooperate with cities to promote the development of intelligent transportation infrastructure and bring the role of the platform in the construction of intelligent transportation and green cities into full play.
