Highway freight still plays a dominant role in the comprehensive transportation system, with the annual freight volume 34.264 billion tons, accounting for 74% of the total freight volume by various transportation modes. There are more than 11 million freight vehicles and over 18 million truck drivers. Major city clusters including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration, the Yangtze River Delta and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as well as the network of trunk transport routes have been continuously improved, and the freight agglomeration effect has become increasingly prominent. The transportation service capacity has been strengthened, the efficiency advantage of expressway has been highlighted, and the timeliness and convenience advantage of highway freight transportation has been consolidated.

In order to further grasp the operation characteristics of highway freight industry in our country, the Logistics Engineering Research Center of China Academy of Transportation Sciences of the Ministry of Transport systematically studies and analyzes the operation and development level of highway freight in China around "safety, scale, efficiency and economy" based on the actual operation data of 7 million trucks on the national highway freight vehicle supervision and service platform.

The report analyzes the problems of low-level transport capacity surplus, fierce homogeneous competition, frequent truck traffic accidents, severe safety production situation, non-standard platform management, damage to the interests of truck drivers, insufficient comprehensive management ability, industry management level to be improved, lack of social care and weak sense of belonging of drivers, and puts forward suggestions on strengthening industry operation monitoring and guidance, regulating the market order, standardizing the freight operation behavior of new business forms, and improving the working environment of truck drivers.
