According to statistics, as of the end of 2017, number of motor vehicles in Xining has amounted to 500,000. The traffic management departments are faced with severe challenges due to the increasing traffic volume in urban areas, limited parking facilities and road safety risks.

In 2015, the Xining municipal party committee and municipal government rolled out “Six Special Projects for Smooth Traffic in Xining”. Besides stepping up the urban road construction, Xining has made great efforts to ease traffic jam. By now, an efficient and intelligent urban traffic command system has been built.

Since 2018, Xining has completed the traffic light test, pipeline and cable laying, upgrading geomagnetic vehicle detecting system and a network of 170 signal-controlled junctions. With the traffic signal control system, 96 junctions, including Xiadu Road and South Road, are under control to give priority to pedestrians.

The Xining traffic police remotely manages the traffic flow through intelligent signal system, and uses the inducing screen to distribute the information, so that the driver can get the latest traffic information in real time and select the appropriate road section to avoid congestion.

Xining’s intelligent transport platform boasts the PGIS map and police positioning system. Currently, there are more than 2,200 public security video surveillance spots, 103 off-site capture systems for illegal parking, traffic cameras in 161 directions of 42 intersections and 12 video surveillance spots. Through the central inspection, any alarm can be identified in a proactive manner.

At present, the average number of vehicle stopping times in the main intersections of Xining has been reduced by 25%, the average travel time reduced by 15%, the rush-hour congestion time dropped by 13%, while the average road traffic efficiency has increased by more than 15%. As such, the traffic congestion in the central districts has been effectively alleviated and the travel environment further improved.
