Workshop on Logistic Costs Held in Beijing

ACTIVITY INTRODUCTION

Nearly 100 participants attended a workshop on logistics in Beijing on September 20, 2017. Co-organized by the World Bank, China Transport News, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the workshop featured expert speakers from China and abroad.

Duan Xin, deputy director of the China Academy of Transportation Science, reviewed how transport data collection methods have evolved in China. He also shared data on goods transported within China including type, distance, origin, and destination.

He Hui, deputy director of China Logistics Information Center, presented the composition, growth trend, and methodology for calculating China's logistics costs. The deputy director indicated that China's logistics costs are noticeably higher than logistics costs in the United States and Japan. In China, higher inventory costs coexist with lower transportation costs. Improved infrastructure usage and goods mobility are critical in order to reduce China’s overall logistics costs.

Citing the case of Kolkata East Freight Corridor in India, Bernard Aritus, senior infrastructure specialist at the World Bank, stressed that logistics costs could be substantially reduced by a well-connected and performance-optimized transport system. Li Tao, a specialist from the Ministry of Transport’s Planning and Research Institute, agreed. Li explained that a logistic corridor can help local economies accelerate industrial upgrading, enhance agglomeration and radiation effect, and improve transportation organization efficiency. Li proposed further optimization of the existing logistics infrastructure as well as additional regulations, standardization, and data collection.

Other workshop attendees included Jan Havenga, professor, Stellenbosch University, South Africa; Lous-Paul Tardif, director of Transport Canada; Li Yanlin, China Academy of Transport Sciences; and Jean Francois Arvis, lead economist on trade and competitiveness, World Bank. Binyam Reja, practice manager at the World Bank, delivered the welcome speech.
