CASE DESCRIPTION |
The car ownership in Tokyo grew rapidly from the 1960s to the 1970s. However, the minimum quantity of parking spaces required was still maintained at a very low figure. Some small buildings were still not allowed to have parking spaces. Since the streets in the residential area are relatively narrow, overnight road parking is prohibited at all times, but to supplement, parking permits are given. By giving a small amount of parking subsidies, the city of Tokyo encourages private investors to construct more public parking lots. Most parking lots in Japan are commercially operated. Supply and prices of parking spaces mainly depend on regional market conditions. The main reasons resulting in the existence of commercially operated parking lots are that the minimum number of required parking spaces for buildings maintained the same for many years and the strict parking management approaches. As a result, the parking demand always exceeds the supply, which leads to demand for commercially operated parking spaces. |
